YouTube Promote vs Google Ads vs Hiring a Promotion Service

All three put your video in front of real viewers through Google's ad system. The difference is how much control you get, how much you need to know, and who does the work. Promote in YouTube Studio is the simplest, Google Ads gives you every setting, and a promotion service runs Google Ads for you for a fee. Here's how to pick.

Key takeaways
  • Promote, Google Ads and legitimate promotion services all use the same Google ad system and the same real viewers.
  • Promote is the simplest: a few clicks in YouTube Studio, with targeting by country, age, gender and interests.
  • Google Ads adds deeper targeting, settings and reporting, but takes time to learn and is easy to misconfigure.
  • A service is worth its fee only if it's open about using Google Ads and saves you time or wasted spend.

Option 1: YouTube Promote

Promote is built into YouTube Studio on the web and in the Android apps. You pick a video, choose a goal (audience growth, video views or website visits), set who should see it and set a budget. Based on YouTube's Promote help page and its creator playbook:

  • Targeting: country, age, gender and interests. YouTube may show the ad beyond the interests you pick to reach more of your chosen demographic.
  • Budget: a campaign can get results from $5, but Google recommends at least $100, and you're never charged more than the total you set.
  • Setup: a Google Ads account is created for you, every ad goes through a policy review that typically takes 1–2 days, and promotions made in Studio are managed in Studio.
  • Limits: the video must be longer than 10 seconds and can't be private. For advanced targeting and in-depth reporting, YouTube points you to Google Ads.

Best for: creators who want something simple and are happy with broad targeting.

Option 2: Google Ads

Promote runs on Google Ads, and YouTube says its Audience growth goal is the same product as a Google Ads campaign that optimizes for channel subscriptions, just with an easier interface. Running Google Ads directly adds control: audience segments (including custom ones and people who've already watched your channel), keywords, topics and placements, plus bidding, scheduling, exclusions and much deeper reporting.

The cost is time and risk. There are enough settings that a first-time advertiser can spend a real budget on broad, poorly matched traffic before noticing. Best for: people willing to learn the platform and check their campaigns often.

Option 3: A promotion service

A legitimate service builds and runs a Google Ads campaign for your video: it chooses the targeting, watches the numbers and adjusts. You pay a fee on top of the ad spend, or a package price that includes both. Our Starter Push is $49 for one video with the ad spend included, and you check the results in your own YouTube Analytics.

The risk is that bot sellers use the same words as real services. Before you pay anyone, read 7 red flags that a YouTube promotion service is selling bot views. Best for: people who want a properly targeted campaign without learning Google Ads.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Promote if you want to try ads this week with a small budget and broad targeting is fine.
  • Choose Google Ads if you want full control and will put in the time to learn it.
  • Choose a service if you want specific targeting and someone accountable for the results, and the service is open about how it buys your views.

Whichever you choose, the views count the same way. None of them count toward Partner Program thresholds; here's why.

FAQ

Is YouTube Promote the same as Google Ads?
It runs on Google Ads. YouTube says Promote's Audience growth goal is the same product as a Google Ads campaign optimized for channel subscriptions, with a simpler interface and fewer settings.
Are views from Promote real?
Yes. YouTube says views and subscribers from Promote are legitimate: real viewers who chose to watch. They don't count toward Partner Program eligibility, though.
Can a promotion service get better results than Promote?
Sometimes, mainly through tighter targeting and ongoing optimization in Google Ads. It can't guarantee results, so judge it by how open it is and by what shows up in your own YouTube Analytics.
Do I need to give a promotion service access to my channel?
No. Running ads on a public video only needs the video's link. A service asking for your password is a red flag.
